Most people think long-hour jobs only drain your body. But researchers have discovered something far more dangerous:
They can slowly switch off your brain.
In a 17-year study published in Frontiers in Psychology (Oltmanns et al., 2017), scientists followed factory workers, care workers, and other odd jobs with simple, repetitive jobs — the kind where you do the same task over and over, day after day.
Two types of people were compared:
Those whose jobs never changed (same routine, same environment, nothing interesting)
Those who own something with new responsibilities or occasional changes.
Their findings were shocking:
The workers who never experienced change — no new skills, same routing, clocking in and clocking out—began to show slower thinking, weaker memory, and even reduced gray matter in parts of the brain responsible for learning and decision-making.
In simple terms:
This kind of job doesn’t just make you tired. It makes your brain stop growing.
And that is not even the worst part; the worst part is that it also takes away the most precious thing you cannot buy back, which is your time and energy.
I figured this out within my first few months in the UK, and sooner or later anyone who is paying attention does too. That realization is what helped me step off the sinking ship before it dragged my future down with it.
Starting an online consulting business became my lifeline. It has been my source of income since 2017.
